Week 4

What I liked the best about this week, is looking for the trends in electronics and internet usage. I am very interested to see what new Census data shows. It is significant to think about what trends and demographics of usage are in order to add to the accuracy of shaping the usage of technology in a school setting.

I also like the idea of having a survey for students, as well as staff. I also thought it was interesting to see student perspectives on the usage of technology in thier school settings.

  1. You mentioned that you wanted to look at the new census data. I’m kind of interested as well, so I asked a few questions. According to the Waukesha County Census Liaison, the 2010 Census didn’t have the “long form” like the 2000 Census. So, we will not have data like the number of households with internet access like we looked at in class. What the Census Bureau is doing is sending out the American Community Survey annually that will collect data from a smaller sample than was used in 2000. Due to the smaller sample, it may take up to 3 years to collect enough sample data to generate the statistics comparable to what we were reading.

  2. Good post and good comment. Beyond the Census data, it is interesting to survey your community and see what people are using. I also like to know HOW the people are using a particular technology. We know kids (and adults) can text, but do they use their smartphones for information gathering? Other types of communication?

I like your approach to demographic research.

  3. I also like looking at the trends in electronics and internet usage. It's amazing to see how people and schools use particular technologies....especially the lastest trends. I wondering whats coming out next and how well people will respond to it.
